Tubal factor infertility occurs when the Fallopian tubes are blocked or scarred and prevents sperm from reaching the ovulated egg. This form of infertility can be caused by pelvic infections, endometriosis, STIs, history of ectopic pregnancies, or previous surgery and is diagnosed by a hysterosalpingogram or laparoscopy.
Obstructions in your Fallopian tube can prevent fertilization or make it difficult for the embryo to travel from the Fallopian tube to the uterus. Tubal factor infertility is responsible for ~25% of all cases of infertility. If one Fallopian tube is blocked, IUI treatment may be an option; however, if both tubes are blocked, IVF treatment will likely be recommended. Fallopian obstructions are a non-factor in IVF because eggs are surgically removed, fertilized in the embryology lab, and transferred directly into the uterus.
