Uterine factor infertility (UFI) affects ~5% of women and can be congenital or acquired. Regardless of origin, UFI prevents women from successfully carrying and delivering a baby. Some causes of UFI include hysterectomy, endometriosis, fibroids, and adenomyosis (growth of the uterus into the uterine wall). Women with UFI will experience higher rates of miscarriage/spontaneous abortion (SAB). If a dilation and curettage (D&C) procedure is done following a miscarriage, it is possible that scar tissue may form on the uterus. Scar tissue can affect implantation and the ability to carry.
