Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs) are the most prescribed antidepressants. In women, there hasn’t been conclusive data suggesting that SSRIs help/harm fertility. However, it is recommended to try acupuncture, exercise, or therapy prior to SSRI treatment. If you have a strong history of depression, it may be best for you to stay on SSRIs during fertility treatment. Please consult with your doctor if this pertains to you. In men, it is possible that antidepressants may reduce fertility by causing DNA fragmentation. SSRIs slow down sperm transport through the body, which causes DNA damage as the sperm are not carried out of the body fast enough. Whether conceiving naturally or with IVF, sperm with DNA damage tends to result in increased miscarriage rates, lower implantation rates, and an overall decrease in pregnancy success. This is a delicate topic and if it applies to you, I encourage you to speak with your doctor.
